It used to be customary because back in the day there were less safety features and a much larger margin for error. It was safer and better to have people who were trained how to use the pump and understood the dangers of the material they were handling. They generally took some pride in their work and would clean up any and all gas spills. Nowa days it's more of a tradition than necessary. But a lot of people liked it up north so they wouldn't have to get out in the snow since there was already a guy out there in a snow suit that was happy to do it for you since it was a respected job.

Now the whole custom seems silly

I never understood why Oregon made a law to preserve a job that had been outdated. I actually didn't know that any state did this until I vacationed in Oregon in 2009. Your gas costs more because you were not permitted to fill your tank yourself.
