In addition to misery, though, I’d add apathy. This is Brave New World playing out before our eyes. Instead of soma, we are provided with pot which leads to pain killers, heroin, meth, and so on. Maybe it’s not misery? But lack of purpose, which ties back to the lack of social cohesion. Emptiness. And drugs simply fill the void. But really, that’s just debating on semantics of it. The cause seems pretty straightforward.
