Years ago, I had a lot of student loans that were forgiven when I became disabled. When the loans were forgiven, that money became "income" in the eyes of the IRS and believe me when I say, The IRS doesn't forgive shit!
You are correct. However, if these are being discharged via the American Rescue Act of 2021, they are non-taxable. I don't know if that precludes states taxing them, but it may.
