You've watched people be medically seperated, not retired. An E-6 might get medically retired, but not E-5 and below.
They are not authorized to use the designation "retired" in correspondence etc.
The military is stupid and does a lot of inane things, but it doesn't medically retire junior enlisted rather than medically seperate them.
