i had to call a city dept. in the preceding recording i was advised that the city offices would be closed friday for "chimpteenth." i played ignorant with the black guy who answered. i asked "what the hell is juneteenth? I heard it mentioned before. he says, and get this, "it's a holiday the city participates in." i asked, "what is it celebrating?" he says in an embarrassed tone "the freedom of all persons who were enslaved." I said, "oh great! that's fucking awesome. my people were indentured servants and many died. the irish were treated like shit. i won't even get into how my other european ancestors escaped the barbary slave trade. man, this is great!!!" i wonder if he googled "indentured servant" and "barbary slave trade."
