Question is whether this is an outside hack, which is suggested by the stolen Facebook user-data being sold on the dark web, or whether this is a desperate attempt by facebook itself to remove incriminating evidence, such as child pornography and exploitation, hosted on their servers. On the other hand, Facebook's own employees cannot get to the physical servers because their employee badges no longer work, so it may be an outside job. More here:

The stolen data happened in late September and was apparently generated by a 4 year "scraping" campaign (this is how it was described) so the timing might just be a coincidence. Also people tried to buy the data and the guy didn't deliver although he did provide samples that checked out.

My point is the stolen data might have nothing to do with today's outage. (Although it still might be related)
