That's how the powers that be diffuse controversies. They give the impression that important people are "looking into it" and they'll surely do something about it if nefarious goings on are discovered. That way you concerned citizens don't need to go hanging guilty parties on your own. "Just trust us to get to the bottom of it and take proper action." Like the Warren Commission did.

Can anyone name a single fucking time in the history of government that an investigation by elected officials resulted in anything meaningful to the average person? I can't.

Stop putting your fucking faith in government. It will always betray you. Always. Always. Always. No exceptions.

You know what would scare the shit out of politicians? If the citizens had a mechanism to appoint their own commission and the members could not hold any kind of public office now or in the past, nor could they be appointees of anyone in political office now or in the past. Give that commission subpoena powers and watch the fireworks.
