Well, perhaps using the first battle of Grozny is a little unfair- this was at a time when the Russians were still reeling from the collapse of the Soviet Union. Their military was in a pitiful state, mostly very young conscripts with shit training. Lots of officers were corrupt and/or flat out incompetent.

The Chechens recorded they were actually a bit taken aback at how reckless the city assault was. Russian armored units moving as though they are in parade, without boots-on-ground infantrymen to support the tanks. Anybody who's played CoD knows that tanks unsupported by infantry, especially in cities with narrow streets/alleyways and lots of windows everywhere, are sitting ducks. They drove into ambush after ambush. The Chechens would target the front and rear vehicle of a column at the start of the ambush, effectively trapping the rest of the vehicles in between. If the Russians had sent infantry groups ahead on foot to clear these buildings, they would've encountered the Chechens lying in ambush and engaged. This would've led to a more cautious approach by the tanks.
