Historically, this is how the shit always starts. Troops on one side or the other sacrifice the moral high ground and start committing atrocities on POWs, thinking that it will terrorize the other side. It never works. It just pisses them off and they respond with more atrocities of their own. Remember the Al-Qaeda beheading videos? They were *supposed* to *scare* the American troops. "This is what we will do to you if we capture you.", they said. Then suddenly they stopped posting them. Why? Because they discovered that all it did was piss us off massively, that the masks they were wearing weren't really all that effective in concealing their identities and that we were entirely capable of identifying them anyway. Then they were getting hunted down, individually, by name, and getting their heads blown off in their own kitchen. And suddenly the videos stopped. I'm old enough to remember what happened when a faction in Lebanon was stupid enough to kidnap a Russian diplomat. The KGB started sending them their son's testicles in glass jars of alcohol until the diplomat was released. How long do you think it will be before Dr. Gennadiy gets fed his own testicles, or gets dumped out of a van somewhere, alive, but with his balls in his eye sockets? Stupid, blind *and* nutless is no way to go through life.
