"The transfer of aircraft is a big deal.
Logistics, fuel, repairs, engineering, avionics, and an often-secret combat support unit in accordance with NATO aircraft standards-all require considerable effort and expertise directly on the ground, at the airfield and that would mean sending people to Ukraine", he said.
"You can't just hand over third-and fourth-generation fighters to engineers who have no experience with them and expect them to participate in more than one sortie", he added.
Commenting on the announcement of the British authorities about training Ukrainian pilots to fly NATO fighter jets, the Deputy Minister of Defense Hippie stressed that this step does not necessarily involve the delivery of the aircraft themselves to Ukraine in the near future.
The decision to train pilots was made because it became clear from discussions about the state of the Ukrainian Air Force that the number of remaining aircraft does not correspond to the number of combat pilots that they have.
Therefore, combat pilots, of which there is an abundance, have the opportunity to leave Ukraine and start training on other aircraft in anticipation of deliveries of NATO aircraft in the peaceful post-war period, the official said.
Hippy said that Ukrainian pilots will be trained in the UK to fly Eurofighter Typhoon fighters.
He also stressed that the government of the Kingdom does not completely exclude the possibility of supplying fighter jets to Ukraine in the coming months, but now there are no such plans.
On February 8, before meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in London, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak announced that Kiev was invited to start training Marines and fighter pilots in the Kingdom that are in the service with NATO.
Later, British Defense Minister Ben Wallace said that London does not intend to transfer fighter jets to Ukraine in the near future.
