It's actually worse than that. Britain was never really a rich 'country' as much as it was a rich city (London) surrounded by lower- and -middle-class towns.

I understand your point. The one I was trying to make (and not doing a good job of) was that most of the country's wealth had been centered in London, from kings and queens of old on down to ((( kings and queens ))) of today.
