(a series wherein I explain to you how to be a game developer. Masterlist of episodes can be found )
a quick footnote i want to throw onto the requested topic while i get the next bit written
i told someone this in a comment to someone else, explaining why i never carry a cellphone around. biggest reason personally is mobile games are literally digital crack cocaine, and i'm not kidding. you've seen me talk in this series about compiling audio/visual data to fool the senses. let me now tell you why that is
video games (and many other other digital entertainment/systems) are all just hyper-advanced skinner boxes. they are fake mini-realities. they need the correct audio/visual data to sell their audio/visual illusion
picking up a mario coin, for instance, causes a positive impulse IE dopamine
losing a life or getting hurt causes a bad impulse IE cortisol
the rat in the skinner box is the player. this probably sounds super-evil but it's the reality of the situation. you hack a players biological chemistry and therefore their emotions via external UI impulses originating from inside the videogame itself. if i can immerse a player, and then i swing a fucking hammer and take half their lifebar, their brain registers that event as half the persons actual life dropping
if i give them a fake digital coin, their brain registers it as an actual gold coin
i'm not trying to trick the player, i'm trying to trick the players animal brain. yes, you read that right, a lot of what you'll be doing skips the player themselves, and instead toys with the chemical/emotional meatsack of their fleshy human brain.
part 2 of this topic is still incoming but i thought i'd mention this since people seemed confused
