TLDR white is bright and shiny, and black is dull

it works off a black and white heightmap, you can sometimes use the same backsheet for height and normal mapping. sometimes the worst case scenario is a color inverted copy to input the exact opposite

at some point i intend to make a high-powerlevel texture tutorial, since detail layers and glow and cutout textures have their own rules
