Before COVID-19, Americans died around the rate of 240,000 a month.

Illness can cause problems after you've recovered and you die, later, from those complications.

AKA, "Died after a short illness."

After COVID-19, that death rate increased by we blamed COVID-19 for more deaths than we should have.

I don't know where this comment should go but a "short illness" can be a lot of things, not just COVID-19 or vaccines. There's 240,000 people to choose from each month.
