When I worked at Cabela's those super discount guns were how we got you in the store. Normally we would only get something like 5-10 of them in period. Most folks would still buy a bunch of crap because they didn't want to walk out empty handed after standing in line for 8 hours. Usually the best deals were on clothing during seasonal change over and we needed to make space.

It can also be part of what's known as a loss leader deal. Take a small hit to get you there then try and make it up with overpriced accessories. Like hey, you can use that rebate on ammo, holsters, slings, hunting gear, ECT.
