They did this in China years ago. The capital was always known as Peking, which was more of a Cantonese pronunciation, but they wanted us to change to the Mandarin pronunciation so they started spelling it Beijing. Both are the same word when written in Chinese characters. Kiev and Kyiv are Russian and Ukrainian pronunciations of the same word when written in Cyrillic characters. Note that many citizens within Ukraine are Russian-speaking (but their government would like to purge or kill them all). I will continue to use and say Kiev. (I also still say Peking. lol)
