These days they know to let the people make their own associations. If they want to associate work with smoking, then they'd just show various footage of men working while smoking. If the box (yeah, I know it's commonplace now) is somehow special and impressive, they would just show the box with perhaps a visual emphasis on it's impressiveness. This sort of mind control they got much better at has also been applied to movies, TV shows, and news. The majority of people are NPCs that are helpless in figuring out this stuff is going on and figuring out the people behind all of it are scum.

Maybe his wife going asking neighbors to borrow theircar to drive to the grocery store and take the kids to baseball practice and stuff? Meanwhile he's locked in a smoke filled garage all day long without anything to eat other than a pack of cigarettes.
