I remember the moment my mother taught me. I was 5 years old, with my mom on the back porch on a sunny spring day and I asked her to show me how to tie my PF Fliers sneakers. Minutes later, I felt so proud of myself when I did it the first time. A simple but cherished memory of "growing up".
Ive met multitudes of 10 even some 12-13 year olds who couldnt tie their shoes when i worked in school.. fucking insane. How did their parents cope with the problem, bought them tie less shoes, or did it for them. Every single time a kid came up to me and asked if i could do it for him, i sinply stated "No, but i can teach you" i got good at it.. and depending on the attention span of the kid i could easily teach them in 5 minutes. Some took longer, i probbly have taught around 50 kids how to do it over the years, it still baffles me when i meet someone out of kindergarten who cant. So sad, parents are fucking inane sometimes.. their idea of making aomething easier, is doing it FOR their child. Ouf..
But i do wish i knew this method back then, it wouldve been a lot faster......
The previous winter my folks had bought rubber boots that had a half dozen metal snapping buckles. That spring my feet were bigger so after a few weeks with my new sneakers with laces and having to have mom re-tie them for me every time a twig or branch snagged them, I asked her to teach me. We didn't have kindergarten in my area back then, very rural.
Your story goes well with an old post about kids wearing diapers to as old as age 11 - https://poal.co/s/Education/646500.
Too many of today's parents suck.
No kindergarten... Mustve been nice. :)
I remember when a kid showed me how in school. "Well shit, that's easy." And then today I learn that he showed me a retarded, complex way that doesn't look as cool as this.
