They are easy to confuse because people frequently call "paraffin wax", "wax." Obviously makes a huge difference in practice. For the reasons you point out. The distinction does become important for food grade products (example, wax paper) as well as soap and candle making. Paraffin will destroy soap and of course the candle exhaust is completely changed for the worse.
