Anytime you see a long sword it is almost exclusively for cavalry. Contrary to what you see in most entertainment, the general priority of weaponry was spears and pikes (long spears against calvary), javelins (spear for throwing), axes, hammers, and then swords. Swords were generally backup weapons. Then daggers, which is a thin, short, short sword. Designed to stab through armor joints. Length required to effect a lethal wound.

Armor was very good against most bladed weapons. With a hammer, you crushed the armor inward, making movement and breathing hard and eventually lethal. Very effective. Axes did the same thing, plus penetration and even cleaving. Axes were very popular. Javelins typically broke after throwing so they couldn't be thrown back. Spears were not intended to be thrown. Their tips were generally more sword-like than arrow.

Swords were terrible for penetrating armor. Which generally targeted limbs. This is why the Greek/Roman swords were really designed for stabbing and much less so for slicing. Which complimented the phalanx. Whereby you stabbed between shields and you moved forward protected by your fellow solder and his shield.
