If ONE of them yelled it would run. They're only dangerous if you surprise them or if they're protecting cubs. Same for all black bears in the continental US (and Alaska). I've come across multiple while hiking and camping and never had a problem. They always tuck and run.
I had one encounter that I think was a brown bear. I was moving into a remote consruction area with some surveyors. We approached a clump of trees shrouding some boulders and got grunted at. Probably a bear warning us off a den. We just stopped and walked backwards out of the area. I never saw the bear so couldn't say what it was.
