Our side spreading lies that are easily proved as being lies only hurts us as anything else we might say will then be easily discounted as lies as well. If one performs actions that hurt us and assist the enemy, then one will be treated as the enemy. (edit: It's called 'poisoning the well' as you are surely aware. How many attempts to dump poison down the well does it take before people start to think that perhaps the person is trying to poison the well?)
