They fucking died, and are still dying. A bunch more have entered forced medical retirement. It's not just the pilots, there are signs of this economy wide. Workers are not returning to work - because they are dead or crippled. The carnage continues. Talk to the insurance guys about the death rates - death has skyrocketed.
