Apt statement with a subtle possible adjustment if I may. I've been digging deep and I know I may offend some, but I am convinced that Catholicism is a brand of Christianity, that was templated over by Saul of Tarsus and the Roman Empire. So, more than half the new testament is just psy-op, crowd control nonsense. Imagine a hitman sent to kill early Christian Gnostics (a form of a thinking man's freemasonry) by the Roman elite because they formed a secret society. Saul realizes they are pretty badass and decides to steal their patent and just steal the name, subverting the whole group one swoop.
Indeed Jesus is the way, but Jesus means truth, or Logos (go to the oldest translations in Greek to see this) and the life of Jesus is actually an analogy hidden in parables. Note how truth gets you crucified by the other's around you? I'm sure many around here have some understanding that all the "died for three days", "born a virgin" and whatnot are just pagen sun-worship principals to help make the bread go down for the masses.
Where the early Christians were right, was not in the gnostic part, but realizing we're cattle and if we vigilantly seek truth, we will not be overtaken by our animal instincts. Jesus is the way, pursuit of truth (the universal truth in things) is virtuous and leads to salvation (i.e. good, correct information lets us play the system for our survival). The rest of it, the roman empire takeover of it, the old gnostic portion (evolving in prayer, or however you want to put it), Saul to Paul, Catholicism, is all BS. In fact, the catholic church WAS what Paul was talking about in revelation. Further, revelation is not about an event, it was a parable about when you become aware in the world (apocalypse means "unveiling"). One more thing to also note is that the earliest finding of the word "Jesus" was from that of a person named Josephus in about 90AD. So, it could have come from that time. I have yet to find any legit historical documents showing Jesus or of the event of Jesus except that it packaged what happened in that time quite nicely.
Anyway, we see the subversion at every level is a deviation away from the idea that we're animals, and have to try to stay truthful. Such as constraint and consideration, versus trying everything and just progressing (without actually empowering).
