My dad was an orphan and joined up on his 17th birthday. Got shipped straight to Korea after bbasic. Got shot and lost a lung at that big battle near a reservoir. It was about 30 below and he was so cold he never bled out. Finally found and shipped to Japan for surgery and recovery. USMC didn't need any badly wounded men so they tried to put him out. He refused to sign any documents. To prove him unfit for duty, they put him back into basic training where he did so well they made him a Drill Sargent. Hahaha! Unfit for war, he got turned down several times when Vietnam came along. Finally, he got dirt on the wife of the Commander at Camp Lejeune base and to get rid of him, they shipped him to Vietnam. He enjoyed it so much. Stayed in for 21.5 years.
