I've always returned wallets, phone and lost items (when possible) I found in different places. The look of their owner's faces when I hand them is priceless to me, because I made their day, and that's exactly what I would want in case I lose something.

Found a woman's wallet on the sidewalk once but it didn't have an ID or anything with an address but did have a checkbook so was able to know where she banked. I took the wallet to the bank and it was run by street shitters. Tried with no avail to get them to give me her address since I didn't trust them a wink. In the end I had to leave the wallet with them and hope for the best... there was probably a better solution...
