As a fencer (sport sword fighter) I cringe when they call themselves swordfighters.

I agree normally but, in this example, I think he was eluding to the fact that when shit truly hits the fan, he has a skill set that doesn't require a gun.
I don't know any competent swordfighter who goes on about it that way.
