A documentary about the People's Temple, famous for drinking coolaid spiked with cyanide, revealed that the suicide was forced on the people by armed men. They didn't do it voluntarily, it was a massacre.
There is way more to it than that, but a majority were indeed shot. Most didn’t drink the koolaid. Jones worked for intel angencies. It was an mkulltra type operation and a popular politician from California was murdered at the same time. Said politician was the reason for the massacre and coverup.
There are a lot of hippie communes that have been around for decades. I’m not in favor of them but there is probably something to be said about not drawing attention to yourself with tons of on-the-books gun purchases

You think all hippies are glowniggers? Or you think it’s actually impossible for a group of them to get together and say “let’s grow our own food and never worry about bathing”?
I never said they were equivalent, and even said I’m not in favor of them. But they do provide an example of off-grid and under-radar self-sufficient communities that don’t get fucked with for the most part. It’s the “under-radar” part that’s important and hardest to maintain for an actual free and working community these days
