When you look at usage of the word "racism," it starts in the 60s and became very popular. It is a letter for letter import of the word racism from Soviet Russia. Before that people in America sometimes talked about "racialism," but I'm not sure what they were saying. The general perspective back then was an accurate and reasonable one, that races were different. The south deciding to keep negros out of white areas was not only reasonable but absolutely necessary. Actually, the negros were better off when they had their own areas where things could be made to suit their style and their needs.
