What anti-nationalists in the west fail to understand is that for any country subjugated by a foreign power their only path to freedom is through fermenting nationalism among their population. This was true for Ireland in the early part of the 20th century and it was just as true for Poland’s solidarity movement in the latter part of the 20th century. People who have been free from strife for too long have the luxury of being able to examine nationalistic philosophy from a purely academic/theoretic perspective, and these days that seems to focus solely on its negative aspects. But when the neck of you and your people are under a jackboot academic concerns about philosophies tend to become a lot less important. Poland still remembers solidarity, but Americans don’t really remember their own nationalistic strike for independence from the British. Those who don’t appreciate and defend their freedom will ultimately lose that freedom though, and in order to regain freedom they will have to become tribal/nationalist. Poland’s approach is correct, but too many people insist on learning why that approach is correct the hard way unfortunately.
