Right. When money is tight the first thing to go is preventative maintenance. Or, hell, continuing to use broken equipment because there is no budget to fix it. This leads to more accidents and fires. Speaking of accidents, the same lack of maintenance due to economic conditions could also be contributing to the increase in car accidents.

I'm thinking way long term. Imagine the manufacturing end of this. All the nuts and bolts and such.

I think we're going to see a dramatic rise in catastrophic "accidents", and the subsequent investigation will reveal that a certain faulty part or decision was the major factor in causing death/damage, and they will find some poor overworked bastard was the man who milled the defective rivet that slipped through QA, leading to a bridge collapse a 16 months later.

How's that for nightmare fuel?

Remember that 11 story condo that collapsed in Florida last year? Yeah, that's what we're going to see more of.
