Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett marked Holocaust Remembrance Day in Israel on Thursday in the presence of the head of the German parliament, saying Holocaust remembrance is part of the genetic structure of the Jewish people.
“ Holocaust remembrance is not just a remembrance but a layer, a piece of DNA that is passed down from generation to generation ,” Bennett said.
Bundestag President Barbel Bas, Israeli President Isaac Herzog and other Israeli officials lit a candle in memory of the victims.
" I bow my head with humility and shame in front of Holocaust victims ," Bass said.
" We are forbidden to forget and we will not forget," she said. "From our historical guilt comes devotion. It is up to us to fight resolutely against anti-Semitism in all its forms, and it is up to us to preserve the memory of the victims and pass on the memory of them to younger generations . "
A representative of the Israeli Likud party, Ophir Akunis, addressed Bas in English, but then continued in Hebrew and said he could never forgive the Germans for the Holocaust.
" Others may be able to forgive the Germans, but I do not forget or forgive, nor will I forgive this act of pure evil, ever. ”
