To replace the Bundeswehr's old Tornados, the U.S. F-35 fighter jets are to be purchased.
But there are probably concerns in the Ministry of Defense about the purchase. Therefore, there will now be an emergency meeting in the Ministry of Defense. Members of the budget committee are appalled.
Members of the budget committee in the Bundestag are unhappy about possible risks in the planned purchase of the F-35 stealth jet.
The newspaper "Bild am Sonntag" reported that there was to be an "emergency meeting" with the responsible committee members this Monday. The trigger, it said, was a secret submission in which the Defense Ministry warned of considerable risks in the deal.
According to the plans of the German government, 35 aircraft of the American stealth bomber, including armament, are to be purchased for 9.99 billion euros.
He said it was open whether the Bundeswehr would get the airfield in Büchel (Rhineland-Palatinate) converted in time for the F-35 jets by 2026.
"Therefore, time delays and additional costs until the start of flight operations cannot be ruled out," the newspaper quoted from the submission. It also said there was a risk that it would not be possible to issue national certification for flight operations in a timely manner.
Union - "Replace Lambrecht before it's too late"!
SPD politician Andreas Schwarz, chief rapporteur in the defense budget committee, told Bild am Sonntag:
"It is unacceptable that Parliament is only now learning about the problems. I expect the ministry to provide comprehensive clarification on how it intends to get the risks under control. An attempt is being made here to get rid of responsibility."
The defense policy spokesman for the CDU/CSU parliamentary group, Florian Hahn (CSU), told the Deutsche Presse-Agentur: "The troops and all of Germany can only be ashamed of this new information.
The question is whether there is incompetence or intent behind it." Defense Minister Christine Lambrecht (SPD) had never identified with the change of era proclaimed by Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD), he said.
"My recommendation to the chancellor would be - Change the minister before it is too late!"
The German government has declared its intention to equip the German Air Force with F-35 stealth jets.
The aircraft, made by U.S. manufacturer Lockheed Martin, are to be procured as a successor to the Tornado fleet introduced more than 40 years ago.
The F-35 is considered the most modern fighter aircraft in the world and is also being purchased for Germany's so-called nuclear sharing - which is a NATO deterrence concept in which allies have access to U.S. nuclear bombs.
According to unconfirmed information, the last of these weapons in Germany are in special bunkers in Büchel.
