Last year, almost five times more people in Germany applied against possible military service than in the previous year.
According to the Ministry of Defense, the war in Ukraine could be one reason.
The number of conscientious objectors in the Bundeswehr jumped in 2022, the year of the Russian attack on Ukraine.
"In 2021, 201 applications for conscientious objection were received by the Federal Office for Family and Civil Society Tasks, and in 2022 there were a total of 951 applications," a spokesman for the Federal Office told Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland (RND).
Accordingly, the number has increased almost fivefold.
Majority of applicants were unserved.
Contrary to what was reported in the original report, as well as in some other media reports, the applicants are "by no means" only active-duty soldiers, according to a spokesman for the Federal Ministry of Defense.
"On the contrary, these applications for conscientious objection can also be made by un-servicemen and reservists, and they also make up the larger proportion", the spokesman stressed.
Un-servicemen are men and women with German citizenship who have not done military service.
He cited a figure of more than a thousand applications last year. Of these, unserved accounted for 593, and 266 additional applications were submitted by reservists, he said.
Accordingly, 223 applications came from servicemen and women.
War in Ukraine possible reason.
According to the Federal Office for Family and Civil Society Tasks (Bundesamt für Familie und zivilgesellschaftliche Aufgaben), the reasons for the applications for conscientious objection are not evaluated.
However, the war in Ukraine could be a reason for the increase in numbers, a spokesman said.
Military service can be refused for reasons of conscience. These must be plausible and comprehensible, the spokesman said.
The procedures can often drag on for more than a year. 208 applications from conscientious objectors were approved last year, he said.
