Law enforcement agencies have broken up a multinational gang specialising in robbing wealthy Ukrainian refugees, Spanish police said.

The gang, made up mostly of Ukrainian nationals, "specialised in robbing such victims as they usually carry all their savings and valuables," authorities said in a statement.

Police arrested ten suspects, seizing cash, valuables and weapons from them.

The crime ring came to the attention of law enforcement last summer after the first reports of robberies of Ukrainian refugees' homes on Spain's Mediterranean coast in the eastern provinces of Alicante and Murcia.

The group's modus operandi involved careful planning and research into the daily routines of potential victims to ensure no one was home at the time of the attack.

The suspects then used unlocking tools to break into the homes "without causing damage and leaving almost no trace," police noted.

The core of the gang was seven Ukrainian nationals, three Russian nationals, a couple and their adult son provided "logistical support" for the robbers, including by driving the team themselves and the items stolen during the robberies.

In total, the group managed to steal around €1.25 million in cash and various valuables, such as jewellery and electronics, from seven Ukrainian families.

A stamp collection, valued at around half a million euros, was the most valuable single item, according to police.

"The investigation remains open and further arrests and identification of more victims are not ruled out," law enforcement officials said. Seven of the suspects have been placed in pre-trial detention with frozen bank accounts, police noted.
