Honestly at this point, I'm kind of wondering if it wouldn't be better for him to just have faced the charges back 10+ years ago. Living in that embassy was essentially prison, but without any of the time counting. Pro move live in the embassy for a year or two preparing your defense, and speedy trial their ass.
