No mention of the fact that Jack Daniel’s is shit whiskey with a good marketing team.
JD is ok whiskey. Brands come and go, but Jack Daniels has been around for a long time - like Jim Beam. Neither are tremendous pours, but more than anything else they are consistent. And at their price points they're good values, and that's all you need for the whiskey and coke/7Up crowd.
Perhaps the most interesting/prescient comment following the article is this:
Julian Van Winkel is a smart man. About 10 years ago he was asked why he doesn’t create more Pappy Van Winkel Bourbon. His answer was simple, if I distilled the current level of demand for my product, in 15yrs I will have a lake of bourbon I will be unable to sell due to the future legalization of marijuana. I guess larger distillers didn’t listen to him. He is positioned perfectly now in the current market.
The market changed, the economy is changing and other alternatives are more in vogue. Build/sell a better mousetrap or intoxicant, and the world will beat a path to your door.
I'll second this. Even drinking on the cheap, Jack's No. 7 is no competition to Dewars white label at the same price. And for only a couple bucks more I can get into Maker's Mark or Jameson's. No draw for Jack No. 7 at all.
Yeah, without those advert dollars maintaining Jack Daniels' "image", teenagers who don't know any better would have stopped asking their older siblings to buy it for them a long time ago. Friends don't let friends drink Jack Daniels, but older siblings are indifferent to the sufferings of teenage idiots.
