In middle school, we had a good financial education in math class, where we competed in groups in a "mock stock market" competition nationwide with other students. You got $10,000 fictional dollars and made stock buy/sell over 6 week periods and were ranked nationally depending on your portfolio value.

Now this was in the day when this sort of thing was not yet done electronically, so you had to look up your stocks in this special book, fill in the bubbles in a form corresponding to the stock's number and quantity, etc. and it was mailed off.

Well we made a big buy (like 80% of the portfolio) in right before that huge upswing. We had this in the bag! Let it ride!

Turns out we had filled out the form incorrectly by 1 bubbled number and bought something else, when the confirmation came back. Fuck!

All we did for the rest of the contest was track where we would've ranked had we not fucked that up. Can't recall who filled it out, probably one of the girls - so much for "good handwriting"!

We would have been #1 in the nation for our grade, after the contest was over. Well anyway, MCI Worldcom tanked like a rock after the contest, but who cares in fantasy money land!
