I was a bit surprised when it didn't contain any Courvoisier

I’m not sure why it’s called that, but it’s basically a Negroni (gin) made with bourbon

A Boulevardier is a man who walks the streets, or Boulevards. Kind of a man about town.

A Negroni is a small Italian nigger. They also walk the streets.
