IMO it's the logic of war at play here
They needed an excuse to start the middle east campaign which ultimately ends with the destruction of iran. They probably thought this campaign was inevitable anyways because geopolitics, muh greatest allies and world dominance, so they settled for "the sooner the better", thinking that the longer they wait, the higher the cost, in terms of expenditures, casualties, sacrifices... And ended up concluding this was the lesser evil
And I don't believe it's going to stop at iran. Beyond iran, I believe russia and china were and are still in the crosshair, since the begining
