The IBM Simon existed around a decade earlier, but was for the elite, not mainstream.

The iPhone 2G admittedly was the first mainstream touchscreen smart phone.

But:

Just because they were first, does not necessarily mean they were the best for the years to come.

In fact, not only had the iPhone 2G and 3G no video recording capabilities, they were quickly functionally surpassed!

Samsung Omnia 2 and Samsung Omnia HD offered this in 2009:

  • 720p video recording (Omnia HD)
  • Slow motion (240p@120fps) - Omnia 2
  • Physical two-level shutter buttons
  • MicroSD
  • Bigger and replaceable batteries!
  • Dual-LED camera flash
  • USB-Mini charging port.
  • Twice the RAM (256 MB)

All of this in 2009!

In 2013, Samsung reached 3 GB RAM on the SGN3, while Apple went from 1 GB to 2 GB RAM in late 2015.

Also, the iPhone 4 had problems with signal reception and fragility. Apple gave out free cases to combat that.

The iPhones in the coming years also were full of gate issues.

  • Bendgate / Flexgate (Apple flex)
  • Apple Wave (microwave charging hoax) - WaveGate
  • Terrible 1715 mAh battery (iPhone 6s) while Samsung had around twice as much + twice the charging speed.
  • effective power crash bug.
  • 1970 date bug.
  • iOS 9 speed issues due to aging, trapped iPhone 4s batteries.

Also, historical functional inferiority.

While Samsung brought exciting things such IR transmitters, Air View, 4K video recording and more sensors in 2013, Apple brought a refined design by Johnny Ive. That houses a tiny cute battery that ages so quickly it can be classified as planned obsolescence.

There are even more.

Apple isn't as iconic as they pretend to be.

It wasn't. But Apple had to introduce it in January 2007 to kill the LG Prada sales that was released on the same month. The Keynote went so viral that people ignored the Prada and waited for the iPhone to be released on July 2007.

Very interesting.

I have already heard of it, but by mainstream, I also meant widely known.

The LG Prada was not widely known compared to the crApple iPhone 2G.

But iSheep still use that as an excuse to label Apple super-innovative.

That's because, as I mentioned in my previous comment, crApple did an emergency Keynote (with a mockup of an unfinished iPhone - They we praying wouldn't crash too much - Though it did) to cut the ground from under LG's feet. And since they were the company that made the iPod, the expectations were high. The iPhone obviously looked way more advanced and its UI was really smooth compared to the Prada.

First gen iPhone was well constructed and decent. They immediately threw it away with that awful plastic iPhone 3G

The first (original) iPhone had a pretty decent design (except non-replaceable battery).

But the iPhone 4 was very fragile and slippery. Dangerous without case.

The video recording on iPhone 2G and 3G (144p@15fps and 240p@30fps) could vw retrofitted using jailbreak.

But mobile phones had video recording for a while already.

Nokia's E-series and 6111 (2005) had it already!

They also had an LED flash light, and the E72 allowrd using the space bar as torch shortcut (hold for 1 or 2 seconds).
