I'm not much into games but thought about getting one of those handhelds in Gameboy format. There's a channel by Taki Udon which covers a lot and gives valuable information, but I still can't decide what might be the right thing. There's just so much I had no idea it even exists. Any recommendations?

Steam deck is my usual recommendation for hand held, but not sure what your looking for in a platform

Those sure seem great. But I was looking more for something in Gameboy or Nintendo DS format.

You can custom rom a DS. Takes a little knowhow, but allows you to play anything. I seem to recall you can also add a Linux distro in, but not sure how handy that would be. Probably your best bet. I have a 3ds, and it is a great little handheld. The thumb stick is a tad wonky though.

I guess this is where I'll head to. The quality of the Nintendo devices, especially the DS are out of this world.

Do you have an smart phone? Start with retroarch and buy a cheap bt controller first. See if you even use it very much. If you do, then look for a handheld

This I tried a while ago and was not satisfied. Nowadays this might change, but I kind of would prefer a dumb device that does only one thing.

The most bang for your buck is gonna be a DS Lite. It can play DS and GBA games, which are both fantastic. DSI is nice but can't play GBA games.

Guess this is where I'll head to, but those other brands still are tempting.
