Putin had no leverage. Russia had a contract to supply gas to the EU. He turned that gas off and owed millions. So the explosion was a great get out for him and he could also blame US.
Shoot yourself in the foot because you don't want to wear a shoe. EU owed HIM money for the gas and he had leverage regardless of a contract. America wanted eu buying gas off them, but Russia offered it cheaper because of their infrastructure and proximity. America has been trying to sabotage russian gas to Europe for decades, they had the means and motive, you have to be a gullible idiot to believe Russia blew up their own pipeline, it's in Russia's interest to have a dependent EU, now EU gets nothing from Russia there is no reason for friendly relations.
