So much of this is simply because voicing an "off color" opinion is basically illegal anywhere else. If you criminalize speech, you just drive it underground where it festers in secret. It's similar to slapping a bandaid on an infected wound. Sure, it's not so unsightly anymore, but now it'll kill you.
