Look, I know this is a controversial statement (well not here on Poal, lol, but otherwise)....
The Civil Rights Movement was not a step forward for America. America was much better off before blacks were given these rights. Was is progress for the blacks? Yes, I think that is a fair statement, but do not confuse that with progress for America.
A crotchety uncle of mine said to me - and I'm paraphrasing - that giving women and blacks equal rights wasn't about helping them. It was a long-game to allow them to show the world they couldn't handle it. Yeah, the country would suffer but we're strong enough to survive. It was either give them enough rope to hang themselves or continue fighting it and never getting anything else done.
Welp the rope is long enough, let's tie the knot!
