There's a lot of churches around me who brainwash their kids to go to 3rd world shitholes for missions
I remember meeting one of these people that decided to do it multiple times over
I asked him why don't he spend his time and energy trying to help out his local community instead, he sort of called me a racist and I never saw / talked him again
Some of these churchs have been bringing in 3rd world for a long time in the name of virtue signaling (they virtual signal 24/7 on social media)

On a certain level I can understand why people do it. There is a difference being poor in America vs other parts of the world. Being poor in America you already get food stamps, rent assistance, free healthcare, etc... Being poor in Africa or South America you might not even have drinkable water.
Still I think it's a fool's errand. As you pointed out there are much more constructive things to do with your charity work.
