On a certain level I can understand why people do it. There is a difference being poor in America vs other parts of the world. Being poor in America you already get food stamps, rent assistance, free healthcare, etc... Being poor in Africa or South America you might not even have drinkable water.
Still I think it's a fool's errand. As you pointed out there are much more constructive things to do with your charity work.
