I had 12-15 files on mag tape back in the early 1980s that I believe originated from DARPA in the early '70s - we made semiconductors for mil/aero. You KNOW they passed these files around as soon as technology allowed it. They were in plain text format, usually 3-4 pages long and when viewed from a couple of feet away looked like detailed black and white images of 1960's nudes. Amazing how well they looked. The guys did an excellent job converting digitized images into text, probably using ultra leading edge developing tech of the day when printers had electric typewriter heads and tractor feed paper.
