That means you get a similar product for a lower cost (free). Combine that with cord cutters and mobile apps for instant access to weather information, it's no surprise that a version on Cable/Satellite is being phased out. I'm more surprised that there are hobbyists interested in keeping it going considering that it is still going, just from different companies.
