Compatibility of formats hasn't changed much since then.

Cramming RCA Color on to the B&W signal and maintaining compatibility was probably the greatest feat of backwards compatibility we've ever accomplished.

Field Sequential Color went to space because RCA color was as big as a car. That pissed RCA off to no end.
